United striker dubbed Rod-replacement - reports

Wigan Athletic are ready to move for Manchester United striker Federico Macheda according to the Daily Mail.

Roberto Martinez is weighing up a January bid for the 20-year-old, as he looks to bolster his Latics squad in an attempt help push the club away from the relegation zone.

Red Devils boss Sir Alex Ferguson has high hopes for Macheda, but such is the plethora of attacking options at Old Trafford, that the Italian forward has had limited first-team opportunities this term.

After bursting onto the scene at Manchester United, Macheda has struggled to nail down a regular place in the side, and last season spent time on loan in his native Italy.

He returned to England at the start of the campaign hoping to push on, but having appeared only in the Carling Cup this year, Macheda may be open to a switch to the DW Stadium as he searches for more regular football.

With the future of contract rebel Hugo Rodallega by no means certain, Martinez could turn to the Manchester United striker to add some much needed firepower to his side when the transfer window reopens in the New Year.
