Ajax captain Jan Vertonghen is reportedly close to a move to Tottenham Hotspur, according to Metro.

The club have sent scout David Pleat to watch the versatile Belgian defender.

And reports suggest the 24-year-old is as close as ever as exiting Ajax, with Spurs, and not Arsenal the preferred destination.

The defender has 18 months to run on his current deal and could be snapped up as early as this January by Arsenal or Spurs.

Tottenham have Michael Dawson out for the foreseeable future, while the fitness of Ledley King and William Gallas is a constant cause for concern.

Arsenal meanwhile have tempered their interest, after their signing Per Mertesacker in the summer, while Thomas Vermaelen has returned from injury.
