Martin Kelly is hoping to add to his Liverpool goalscoring account after notching his maiden strike in the 2-0 League Cup win over Chelsea.

The England U21 international sealed the victory at Stamford Bridge with a free-header midway through the second period, adding to Maxi Rodriguez's earlier strike.

Both goals were created by Welsh winger Craig Bellamy, who was outstanding for the Reds throughout, and Kelly admits confidence is running high in the Anfield camp after two wins in west London in the space of nine days.

"I was made up with the goal and it was a long time coming getting my first one for Liverpool. It was a great cross from Craig and I managed to get a free header," Kelly told the official Liverpool website.

"We were attacking the end with all the away supporters and it was brilliant seeing all their emotions as they celebrated. It's fantastic to get a goal for such a big club.

"It was great to score against Chelsea and help us reach the semi-final of the Carling Cup. We have beaten Chelsea twice now in the space of a few weeks and it was a great team effort out there."

The defender was left in no doubt that Kenny Dalglish's side deserved the victory last night, with Andy Carroll's missed penalty in the first-half not proving costly for the Reds.

And, with a clean sheet in the bag, Kelly is hoping more first-team opportunities will be coming his way for the Merseysiders, and has vowed to continue working hard in training in an effort to impress the boss.

"We definitely deserved the win. With the possession we had in the first half we knew the goal was coming and we are delighted to get the victory," he concluded.

"I'm made up to get a chance tonight and now I have to keep working hard in training. I hope to bring more goals to my game. I used to be a central midfielder when I was younger and I do have that attribute in my locker.

"I keep working on my attacking play as well as keeping on top of the defensive work. At the minute I'm looking forward to getting some more game time and showing the boss what I can do.

"When the Carling Cup next comes around we'll try our best to get through to the final."
