German striker courting 'top' Gunners

Arsenal target Lukas Podolski has publicly signaled his admiration for Arsene Wenger’s side.

The Cologne striker has been continually linked with a move to Emirates Stadium, and now he appears to be fanning the flames of speculation.

A fee of £20 million has been suggested as the sufficient amount for Arsenal to secure the signing of Cologne’s prized asset.

Podolski was recently quizzed on the Gunners’ interest in him, and did little to quell any suggestion he may be going to the Emirates Stadium.

“Arsenal are a top club. They have a good team and play right at the top level in England,” he replied with a mischievous grin.

Podolski returned to his boyhood club after an unhappy spell with Bayern Munich, but has grown frustrated this season.

Despite the Germany international scoring nine goals in 11 games this season, Cologne have lost four out of the last six and are hovering just three points above the Bundesliga relegation zone.

Cologne are not playing in Europe this season, so ‘Poldi’ would be eligible to play in the Champions League – a rare occurrence in January signings.

Arsenal are seeking some credible back-up for in-form but injury prone captain Robin van Persie, with current options Marouane Chamakh and Park Ju-Young failing to impress.

Chamakh will also be away on Africa Cup of Nations duty in January, meaning Arsene Wenger will be left with only two centre forwards.

The 26-year-old broached the prospect of a transfer away from his club earlier this week.

“My family and friends may live here, but if I am in top condition, then I think I could fit into any side in Europe. I am not forced to stay only in Cologne,” he said.
