Chelsea are being linked with a January raid on Brazilian full-back Bruno Cortes.

The 24-year-old Botafogo defender has been earning rave reviews in his homeland, earning a first international cap against Argentina after impressive performances in Serie A.

Inter Milan, Juventus and Sevilla are all said to be keen on the player, whilst The Daily Mail reports that Chelsea are now leading the English chase for the player.

Andre Villas-Boas is being tipped to raid the transfer market in January, with defenders a priority for the Chelsea boss after a disappointing start to the current campaign.

"We have to decide if we want to strengthen the squad or not. We'll have to see if we are approached by any club regarding our players, which can happen as well, and then make the wisest of decisions," said the Blues manager ahead of this weekend's league clash against Newcastle.

Were Chelsea able to bring Cortes to Stamford Bridge, the left back would join compatriots David Luiz and Alex in defence, as well as midfielder Ramires in west London.

His role would predominantly be to serve as cover for Ashley Cole in the capital, although the rampaging defender has the ability to play in a more attacking role if required by the Chelsea boss.
