Cesc Fabregas admits Saturday night's El Clasico was a 'brutal' clash after Barcelona's 3-1 win at the Santiago Bernabeu.

Things couldn't have started much worse for the visitors, with Karim Benzema capitalising on an error from Victor Valdes to put Real Madrid 1-0 up in the first minutes of the match.

But the La Liga and European Champions showed their title credentials with a rousing comeback. Alexis Sanchez equalised before the interval, and goals from Xavi and Fabregas secured the victory.

"This was brutal. I've won important things in my career but this is very special for me," said the Spanish international midfielder.

"The first half was difficult but in the second half we played a great game.

"We played 70 minutes with a three-man defence and to win 3-1 here at the Bernabeu says a lot about this team. This gives us confidence for the Club World Cup."

Pep Guardiola's side have already flown to Japan for the aforementioned tournament, and do so top of the league on the head-to-head ruling implemented in Spanish football.

Jose Mourinho's side will have the chance to instantly bounce-back against Sevilla next weekend though, and have a game in-hand over their arch-rivals in the race for the domestic crown.
