Current Barclays Premier League top scorer Robin van Persie is the overwhelming favourite for this season's golden boot, according to a survey conducted by GiveMeFootball.

The Dutch forward leads the way in the scorers charts with 15 goals, during a year in which he's amassed 33 league goals in all.

And according to supporters, the advantage he takes into the festive period over the likes of Sergio Aguero, Demba Ba and Wayne Rooney, who have each scored 11, will be enough to see him crowned the league's premier marksman come the season's finale.

A massive 65% of the supporters polled said they felt Van Persie would scoop the award, while just 23% opted for Rooney, who netted eight goals in his first four league outings of the season.

Similarly stunning form befell Manchester City's Sergio Aguero, with the Argentine scoring eight times in his first five league games of this term, but like Rooney has since failed to recapture the same goalscoring form.

Ba, who has made the switch from West Ham United to Newcastle United seamlessly in the summer, wasn't considered to be a major contender by supporters as he scooped just 1.2% of the vote, despite having shot The Toon into the top seven in the Premier League following a blistering start to the campaign.

City's other in-form marksman, Edin Dzeko, on loan Tottenham Hotspur forward Emmanuel Adebayor and Blackburn Rovers' Yakubu also trailed Van Persie in the vote.

The 28-year-old is just three goals away from equaling Alan Shearer's record of 36 league goals in a calendar year, and has the ideal opportunity to move closer when The Gunners head to the Etihad Stadium this Sunday to take on Manchester City.
