Stoke goalkeeper Asmir Begovic is hoping to recapture the number one jersey at the club after a strong performance in the Europa League defeat to Besiktas.

The Potters lost 3-1 but a series of stunning saves by the Bosnian kept the score line respectable.

Begovic started the campaign as first choice but a number of errors meant he was dropped after a 5-0 home defeat against Bolton Wanderers, leaving Thomas Sorensen to step in.

The ex-Portsmouth stopper has taken his place between the posts in cup competitions but hopes to make a league return soon.

"My head never dropped and my confidence was still high," Begovic told local newspaper The Sentinel. "I just concentrated on putting myself in a position where I'm working hard to get back into the team.

"It's the manager's decision to prefer Sorensen and I respect that whatever happens. My goal is to get in the team and I will have to see if there is any more I can do to achieve that."

Despite last night's poor result, Stoke have qualified for the last 32 and some players were bombarded with objects by the Turkish fans.

"It's a tough crowd and a tough atmosphere, so we had to stick together," he continued. "I think we can be proud of our efforts.

"We will see what the draw gives us, but there are going to be some really tough games waiting for us. Now it's our goal to see how far we can get in the competition."
