Liverpool’s Daniel Agger has hailed his defensive partner Martin Skrtel.

Kenny Dalglish’s side have the best defensive record in the Barclays Premier League and much of this is down to the blossoming partnership between Agger and Skrtel.

The Anfield side have conceded just 13 goals in 16 games but, while the Dane was praising of Skrtel, he acknowledged the team as whole as key to their form.

“We enjoy playing alongside each other. I think Martin and I understand each other well and we complement each other well,” Agger said.

“We feel good together and it is important that, as a central defender, you feel that way. It was a great header from Martin and he’s doing really well.

“But, to be honest, the whole team has defended well. It’s not only about us. Everyone has made a difference.

“There is plenty of competition in the squad and that is the way it should be at Liverpool Football Club.”

Kenny Dalglish’s side are sitting just outside the top four in sixth – level on points with Arsenal.

This league position may have been better had Liverpool’s forwards been as effective as their defenders so far.

The Reds have an underwhelming scoring record this season, but their defensive efforts could provide a sound base for a second half f the season push towards the Champions League spots.

This partnership between Agger and Skrtel has even meant that Kop legend Jamie Carragher has been consigned to the bench in the past few weeks.

This is expected to continue when the Anfield outfit travel to the DW Stadium and face Wigan in their next Barclays Premier League fixture on Wednesday.
