Wenger hasn’t found defensive replacement

Arsenal boss Arsene Wenger has admitted he has not found the defensive signing he wants in the transfer window just yet.

The Gunners chief has previously spoken of his need to bring in a short-term loan to cover the Emirates Stadium club’s defensive injury crisis.

Despite looking for cover, Wenger has been unable to identify a suitable candidate as yet and feels the current market makes any signing difficult.

“At the moment nothing, we don't have a concrete case but we don't rule it out. [A loan defender is] the likely scenario, yes,” Wenger told the club’s official website.

“[I am expecting a] quiet [market]. Europe is depressed and there is not a lot of money available, only some clubs who have exceptional resources.

“Let's say that clubs who are not linked with the economic environment at the moment can buy!”

The Frenchman is faced with one of the worst injury crises he has had to deal with in his time at Arsenal.

Already missing all four first team full-backs, Wenger then saw Thomas Vermaelen have to be withdrawn against QPR with a calf strain.

The problems were further compounded in the calamitous loss to Fulham earlier, with Johan Djourou seeing red and subsequently being suspended for Monday night’s FA Cup fixture against Leeds United.

Bacary Sagna and Kieran Gibbs are the two specialist full-backs who will return soonest, but this will not be for another few weeks according to Wenger.

The North Londoners have been linked with a number of defenders leading up to January, including Wayne Bridge of Manchester City and Taye Taiwo of AC Milan.

However, Wenger dismissed any suggestion he would sign the City outcast and Taiwo’s agent has said there has been no contact between the two clubs over the Nigeria international.
