Manchester United midfield target Riccardo Montolivo will snub a January transfer in order to save Fiorentina from relegation, according to Football Italia.

Montolivo had been linked with a move to Old Trafford after Sir Alex Ferguson’s well-documented problems in central midfield.

Now one of the player’s agents has come out to quash rumours of a move to fellow Serie A side Milan, or anywhere else.

“As far as I know, there has been no type of request at all from the Rossoneri during this period,” Carlo Pallavicino told Lady Radio.

“It’s true that there are still 10 days to go in the transfer market, but an operation of this kind would take some time.

“I also think that Montolivo would like to leave Florence in a better manner than the unhappy reality that he is going through right now.”

Montolivo is a creative central midfielder and it was thought Ferguson would make a move to cover his midfield injury problems.

The Italy international’s contract with the Viola runs out at the end of the season and the Serie A strugglers were expected to cash in.

It now appears the Florence team believe there would be more value in letting the player go for free at the end of the season and help them avoid relegation.
