Manchester United are not interested in signing Benfica winger Nicolas Gaitan, according to the player's agent Jose Irribaran.

The Argentine international has constantly been linked with a switch to Old Trafford, following impressive showings in the Champions League.

Five assists from six games helped his club Benfica qualify for the knock-out stage of the competition at the expence of Sir Alex Ferguson's men, but a move to the Premier League champions isn't in the offing according to his agent.

"Gaitan's goal is to play well for Benfica and be a champion at the club, where he is very happy" Jose Irribaran told Antena 1.

"I do not know if there is interest [from United and City], but I think that any team in the world would like to have Gaitan.

"However, there is nothing yet."

Gaitan has also been linked with a move to Manchester City however, ex-midfielder Geovanni, also formerly of Benfica, has urged the 23-year-old to join the red half of Manchester.

"Right now, United would be more appropriate," Geovanni told Radio Renascenca. "City have plenty of attackers, so I think he would have more chances to play at United."

United have been previously been linked with a £29.3 million move for Gaitan, however The Daily Mail reports suggest the player's release clause is around the £37.5 million mark.

If the club were to match the reported valuation, Gaitan would become the club's record signing, ahead of the likes of Dimitar Berbatov and Rio Ferdinand.
