Wigan Athletic chairman Dave Whelan is bracing himself for a ‘last minute’ deadline day bid for Hugo Rodallega from Tottenham Hotspur

Spurs have been linked with a move for the Colombian striker and Whelan said he would not be surprised if a late offer came in from White Hart Lane.

The Latics chief admitted that getting a fee for Rodallega would make sense considering he is out of contract in the summer, but claimed Spurs transfer dealings tend to be very last minute.

“We are used to Tottenham making a last minute bid on transfer deadline day, and by last minute, I mean the very last minute,” Whelan told ESPNsoccernet.

“I have seen Spurs linked with Rodallega for some time, but we have not received a bid, not even an enquiry as far as I know.

“But that doesn't mean they won't make a bid, but if they do they always leave it late, very late.

“It might make sense to cash in now, but if he stays with us to the end of the season he can help us stay up, which would be worth far more than a transfer fee.”

There is greater intrigue surrounding this possible deal as Wigan travel to White Hart Lane to face Spurs in the Premier League tonight.

This would throw up a situation that could see Rodallega play against Spurs in the fixture and then sign for them immediately afterwards.

As Whelan said, Tottenham are not averse to making very late moves in the transfer window and have done so successfully in the past.

Two notable deals were those of Rafael van der Vaart and Dimitar Berbatov, who were transferred very late in the transfer window for their respective moves.
