Liverpool have today confirmed the signing of Sporting Lisbon starlet Joao Carlos Teixeira.

The 19-year-old Portuguese youth international joins the Academy ranks on Merseyside with immediate affect, after the Reds revealed on their official website that a deal had been finalised.

"Teixeira will join Liverpool's Academy after the formalities of his transfer were completed," read the statement.

Compared to former FC Porto and Chelsea playmaker Deco, the teenage talent has been on the radar at Liverpool for several months after making an impression during a NextGen Series clash in August.

Teixeira scored in a 3-0 win for the Leões at Anfield, and has subsequently trained with the club's first team without earning a senior appearance under Domingos Paciência.

And, with financial problems at the Estádio José Alvalade, Liverpool have been able to snap-up the player for a reported £850,000.

Kenny Dalglish will be hoping the player can follow in some big footsteps in England following the move from the Primeira Liga, with Cristiano Ronaldo and Nani both graduating from Sporting Lisbon's academy before making their mark in the Premier League at Manchester United.
