Chelsea made a late move to bring Argentine international striker Gonzalo Higuain to the club, according to reports.

Spanish publication Marca cite radio reports claiming that Andre Villas-Boas firmly set his sights on the Real Madrid striker, making a €40 million move just before the close of the January window.

Higuain was the subject of much transfer speculation throughout the first month of the year, with the Blues believed to be courting the 24-year-old ahead of a possible New Year move.

And the speculation suggests that the former Porto boss made his play to bring the former River Plate hitman to Stamford Bridge, offering a huge sum in an effort to entice Jose Mourinho into a sale.

'The Special One' opted against letting the player leave for west London, despite his ties to the Blues and Higuain's current role as back-up to Karim Benzema at the Santiago Bernabeu.

Marca goes on to claim that Chelsea will look to negotiate a possible deal for Higuain in the summer after the failed attempt, with 'AVB' eager to bring his target to the capital next season amidst uncertainty over Didier Drogba's contract on the King's Road.
