Sturrock rues missed chance

Southend boss Paul Sturrock has bemoaned his sides recent dip in form which has seen Cheltenham leapfrog them at the top of the League Two table.

The Shrimpers threw away a 2-0 lead away at lowly Plymouth Argyle, leaving Cheltenham two points clear at the top with a game in hand.

With Cheltenham's game at Crawley postponed, the Shrimpers had the chance to re-take pole position in the title chase. And with goals from Michael Timlin and David Martin Southend seemed to be coasting, but two late goals from Nick Chadwick and Alex MacDonald earned the Pilgrims a point.

After losing 4-1 at home to Swindon in midweek Sturrock was disappointed to drop two more points against relegation threatened Plymouth and the former Southampton manger believes his side only had themselves to blame.

He told SkySports: "I have played and been involved in hundreds of games like that, where a team is so dominant and all of a sudden decides it is going to happen and then goes to sleep. That is what we did.

"I also want to look on the positive side and we are still in the top three, second, and we will take a point because the aim is to win our home games and pick points up away.

"If we do that we are going to be promoted."

Sturrock will hope the Shrimpers regain their momentum when they face Rotherham at Roots Hall on Saturday.
