Harry Redknapp is the clear favourite of the England players to succeed Fabio Capello as national manager following the latter's resignation from the post on Wednesday evening.
Capello stepped down from his position following a disagreement with the Football Association after chairman David Bernstein took the decision to strip John Terry of the England captaincy.
Bernstein took the decision to depose Terry after the Chelsea defender saw his trial for the alleged racial abuse of Anton Ferdinand delayed until after this summer's European Championships.
Only a matter of hours before the 65-year-old brought an end to his tenure, Redknapp had been acquitted of tax evasion at Southwark Crown Court; a decision which prompted bookies to stop taking bets on the Tottenham becoming England manager.
Following the news about Capello, a number of England players took to Twitter to thank the Italian for the job he conducted in charge of the national team, while Wayne Rooney and Rio Ferdinand backed Redknapp to replace him.
Gutted capello has quit. Good guy and top coach. Got to be english to replace him. Harry redknapp for me.
So Capello resigns....what now....
I think we need an English manager now, we don't need anything else lost in translation....Harry Redknapp would be my choice by a distance.
Shocked about news on Fabio Capello...gutted to be honest, gave me my 1st cap and believed in me! Thank you Mr Capello! #GreatManager
People have there own judgement on Capello but for a young player who was given the chance to play for my country at such a young age...
He has shown great belief and trust in me so I can only thank him....massive influence on my career so far! Sad to see him go!
The question everyone is asking, fans and players, where do we go from here? Euro's is just around the corner and we have no manager?!?
Sad news to see Capello step down. Good man and a Good manager. #ThanksForEverythingNews Now - Sport News
