Football News

Kenneth Vermeer - 6
Looked dodgy with a number of pass backs and allowed the ball through his legs for United's opener.

Vurnon Anita - 6
Unsure at the back, and often found himself dragged to the left, leaving Young free.

Toby Alderweireld - 5
Unable to contend with United's movement up front and run ragged during both goals.

Jan Vertonghen - 6
Often rampaged from centre-back and looked dangerous, but couldn't handle Hernandez's movement.

Dico Koppers - 4
Barely lasted 45 minutes such were his problems at left-back. Both Jones and Nani had joy.

Christian Eriksen - 7
As threatening as any Ajax player on the night and almost netted a memorable equaliser.

Siem de Jong - 6
Forced De Gea into a rare save in the first-half. Overrun by Carrick and Cleverley.

Ismail Aissati - 5
Tended to sit back in midfield as Eriksen pressed on.

Miralem Sulejmani - 5
Dominated by Ferdinand up front. Rarely posed a threat.

Dmitry Bulykin - 6
A physical presence in the final third, which almost yielded a first-half goal

Aras Ozbiliz - 6
Had an opportunity to level the scores but blazed over. Quiet on the right

Ricardo van Rhijn - 6
Nicolai Boilesen - 5
Jody Lukoki - 5

Manchester United

David De Gea - 7
Made a crucial save from De Jong in the first-half but wasn't forced into regular action.

Phil Jones - 7
Needed no invitation to get forward even if his defensive responsibilities were often shunned.

Rio Ferdinand - 8
Continued his return to form with an assured performance. Battled well with Bulykin.

Jonny Evans - 8
Looks calmer with every performance. Effective in starting United attacks.

Fabio da Silva - 7
Like his brother, is growing with defensive assurance. Provided a decent outlet on the left.

Nani - 7
Wasteful in the first-half, but provided the cross for Young's opener. Sharpness will come.

Tom Cleverley - 7
Following four months out, Cleverley made a decent return, keeping the United midfielder ticking over

Michael Carrick - 8
Another whose recent form has coincided with United's upturn. Played a delicious pass to set the visitors on their way for a second.

Ashley Young - 8
Excellent finish to hand United the lead before making way for Valencia.

Wayne Rooney - 7
Carried little goal threat but his work off the front allowed the likes of Hernandez and Young to thrive.

Javier Hernandez - 8
A livewire up front all evening. Should have broken the deadlock after the interval, but was clinical as ever in the closing stages.

Paul Scholes - 7
Antonio Valencia - 7
Danny Welbeck - 6
