Reds fans focused on fourth

With Liverpool set to face Cardiff City in the Carling Cup final at Wembley this weekend - most fans would expect their team to come out victorious, given their opposition currently are playing in the the lower league of the Championship.

GMF posed the question to Liverpool fans if they would prefer the club to achieve Champions League qualification, or get their hands on some silverware this weekend.

With nearly 6,000 respondents the results seemed to be unanimous in favour of a top four finish - something that the club will not have achieved in three seasons if they fail to do so this year.

In fact, 75% of votes desired Kenny Dalglish's men to qualify for the illustrious UEFA Champions League, making this weekend's fixture somewhat of an anti-climax, perhaps.

This is something former Reds midfielder Jamie Redknapp has spoken of, suggesting the club need to get used to a winning mentality starting at Wembley on Sunday.

Redknapp said: "People might say the Carling Cup isn't the most important trophy in the world, but winning is a habit and you only have to look at what happened last year to see that.

"Arsenal went into the final against Birmingham absolutely flying. They were still in the hunt for the Premier League, FA Cup and the Champions League at that point, but they lost to Birmingham and it really knocked the stuffing out of them."

As the club try to push for that last Champions League spot, a loss to lower league opposition could result in a dip in morale - which is dangerous for a club looking to succeed.

The SkySports pundit also highlighted: "Kenny Dalglish is a winner, he always has been, and he will be trying to instil that into his players.

"They are obviously massive favourites to win, but Cardiff will start the game with exactly the same chance as Birmingham did last year - and we all know what happened there."

Currently sitting in 7th place, the boys from Anfield are four points off Chelsea with 13 games remaining in the Premier League campaign.

As the poll suggests, qualification for the Merseyside club would seem to be highly beneficial - with economic factors a plus, along with the ability to attract higher quality players - with the lure of Champions League football something Liverpool need in order to keep up with their rivals from Manchester and London in the coming seasons.
