Stuart Pearce has been given a swift lesson in international management after three of his players were ruled out of England's friendly with Holland on Wednesday.

Following the ankle injury Darren Bent suffered in Aston Villa's goalless draw with Wigan on Saturday that Alex McLeish confirmed would prevent his participation, Manchester United pair Wayne Rooney and Tom Cleverley were sidelined on Sunday.

Neither man was able to play for the Premier League champions in their win over Norwich at Carrow Road. Rooney has not recovered from a throat infection and Cleverley has an ankle injury.
