With no fixture at the weekend, Everton fans had to suffer the sight of their local rivals Liverpool lifting the Carling Cup after they defeated Cardiff City in a dramatic penalty shoot out at Wembley.

However, Belgian midfielder Marouane Fellaini drew positives from the week's rest, as he explained to the clubs official website.

"It's a good time to be getting players back and they are important players too - Jagielka, Ossie, Jack Rodwell, Seamus was back last week," he said.

"It's important the team has a lot of players, it's important for the cup and the league."

Fellaini, 24, spoke ahead of the Merseyside club's visit to Loftus Road next Saturday, with David Moyes' side looking to climb into a Europa League spot with three points.

The Blues got back to winning ways in their last Premier League outing - deservedly beating Andre Villas-Boas' Chelsea 2-0 in what could be the kick start the club needs to put a sequence of good performances together.

When talking about the return of English trio Jack Rodwell, Phil Jagielka and Leon Osman - Fellaini highlighted the importance he feels they hold for the team.

"They're important and when they come in they help the team," he said.

"They have a lot of experience, they are international quality players and they're fresh too because they've had a long rest.

"You also know they're going to give 100 per cent because it's a long time since they've played and they will want to play again."

Along with European qualification ambitions, Everton also hope to progress into the semi-finals of the FA Cup as they were given a home tie against Martin O'Neill's Sunderland - something former goalkeeper Neville Southall described as a favourable draw.

He said: "If they play to their capabilities then they are more than capable of winning the FA Cup. If you look at the teams left in it you have to say why not?"
