Emmanuel Adebayor has demanded an immediate response from his teammates after Tottenham suffered an embarrassing 5-2 defeat at the hands of Arsenal in last weekend's Premier League north London derby at the Emirates Stadium.

The 28-year-old Togolese striker says it's time for Spurs to show their mettle in this year's title race, and bounce back from that defeat by putting in a positive performance when Manchester United visit White Hart Lane this Sunday.

"If you want to be champions these games against the likes of Manchester United are the kind of games we have to be winning," Adebayor told Spurs TV Online. "The Arsenal game has been a tough one, the defeat is very heavy, but we have to carry on.

"We have to keep focused. We have to show character in front of our fans and manage to win that game."

Despite taking an early 2-0 lead against the Gunners, courtesy of goals from Louis Saha and Adebayor from the penalty spot, Harry Redknapp's side capitulated when they conceded five goals without reply.

The defeat has dented Tottenham's hopes of winning their first league title since 1961, but three points over United this weekend will help close the gap at the top once again.

Adebayor admitted that the result was particularly hard to take as a former Arsenal player who has been the subject of jeers from the Gunners' fans, but he acknowledged that the right team won on the day during a classic encounter.

"After my penalty I thought the game was over, but they showed good character, played some good football and came back so congratulations to Arsenal," he continued. "Unfortunately we didn't manage to beat them but the season is long, we just have to keep focused and keep going.

"After losing 5-2 to Arsenal we can't ask for a bigger challenge than playing Manchester United, but we are looking forward to it. It will be a tough game but I think we are ready for it.

"We just have to show personality and character and bounce back as quickly as possible."
