Arsenal defender Per Mertesacker has revealed he keeps in regular contact with Gunners target Lukas Podolski.

Arsene Wenger has been continually linked with a summer move for the Cologne striker and Mertesacker’s comments suggest a move to Emirates Stadium may be interesting him.

The two players know each other due to being international team-mates with Germany and the big defender, who is recovering from ankle ligament damage, has received texts from the striker about Arsenal.

“He has been very interested in the past few weeks and has sent me a number of text messages,” he told Sky Deutschland.

“I've told him that this is a great place to work and that Arsenal are an amazing club. Nothing has been agreed on yet, though, and Lukas hasn't given me a ring yet.”

The Poland-born forward has been in impressive form in the Bundesliga this season, scoring 16 goals already, but his side are flirting with relegation after five games without a win.

Wenger could be looking for a striker to ease some of the goal-scoring burden on Robin van Persie, who has hit the net 32 times already this season.

His current deputies Marouane Chamakh and Park Ju Young have so far been unable to perform to the necessary standard, only scoring two goals between them this season.

South Korea captain Park has barely played at all since his move from Ligue 1 side Monaco.

Were Podolski to make the switch to Emirates Stadium, he would another compatriot Thomas Eisfeld, whom Arsenal signed from Borussia Dortmund in the summer.
