Arsenal are planning to stagger payments to Cologne for Lukas Podolski upon his arrival at the Emirates Stadium, according to the Daily Express.

The Germany striker is expected to join The Gunners this summer having netted 16 goals in 21 Bundesliga appearances this season.

With Arsene Wenger looking to conduct the majority of his summer business early in the transfer window, in contrast to last year when a flurry of late summer buys contributed to the club's slow start, the particulars of Podolski's deal are being finalised.

Cologne are in line to receive up to £500,000 if Arsenal should claim either the Premier League title or the Champions League following the signing of the 26-year-old on a four-year deal.

In addition, the club are also likely to pay off the investors that helped finance Podolski's move from Bayern Munich in 2009.

Podolski is seen as a crucial addition in Arsenal's attempts to break their seven year trophy duck.

Knocked out of the Carling Cup by Manchester United, the FA Cup by Sunderland, and the Champions League by AC Milan, Wenger's side lie 18 points off leaders Manchester United in the Premier League table.
