Manchester United have launched a second bid to sign Benfica midfielder Nicolas Gaitan, according to sources in Portugal.
TalkSPORT reports that the reigning Premier League champions made an offer in the region of £16million to bring the 24-year-old to Old Trafford in the summer.
The front page of Portuguese newspaper Record now claims that after having their initial offer knocked back by the Primeira Liga giants, Manchester United have returned with an improved £20million offer in order to seal a deal.
With a creative midfielder high on Ferguson’s list of priorities in the forthcoming transfer window, Gaitan - who can play on either wing or in a more central role - has been identified as an ideal acquisition.
Manchester City have also been credited with an interest in signing the Argentine international, but it's their local rivals who remain favourites to land him ahead of the 2012-13 campaign.
