GMF: Top Ten WAGs

Football News

It seems football and glamour go hand-in-hand these days, with the rise of the WAGs (Wives and Girlfriends) dating back to the 2006 World Cup in Germany.

On that occasion, the likes of Victoria Beckham, Cheryl Cole and Abbey Clancy often stole the headlines from their husbands in the British press, making headlines for their late night outings and extravagant support.

Whilst it didn’t end well for Sven-Goran Eriksen’s men six years ago, it’s certainly increased the profile of the professional footballer’s other half.

In honour of the WAG, we pick a ‘top ten’ for the GiveMeFootball reader to cast their eye over. Enjoy...

10. Mellissa Satta (Kevin Prince-Boateng)

The former Portsmouth attacking midfielder landed on his feet with a move to AC Milan in 2010, and now has Italian model Satta on his arm at the San Siro.

She even took the blame for his recent spell on the sidelines in Serie ‘A’, revealing the couple’s bedroom activity had led to injury.

We’re sure his manager was delighted.

9. Frankie Sandford (Wayne Bridge)

Sunderland’s on-loan defender has been dating singer Sandford – who is part of girl group The Saturdays - since 2010.

Formerly part of S Club Juniors, Sandford had also been romantically linked with England defender Ashley Cole in the past, but is now long-term with the Manchester City full back.

8. Alessia Ventura (Filippo Inzaghi)

The predatory Italian striker scored again in the shape of TV presenter Ventura, who began life as a mode before moving into broadcasting.

Inzaghi was renowned for being a playboy in his homeland, but is unsurprisingly a one-woman man with the 31-year-old in his arm.

7. Edurne Garcia Almargo (David De Gea)

The young Spanish stopper had a difficult start to life in Manchester United, but has quickly risen to the challenge of life in the Premier League.

And, with pop star Garcia Almargo at his side, De Gea is also playing at the highest level when it comes to top flight WAGs.

6. Lena Gercke (Sami Khedira)

The Real Madrid midfielder raised his profile back home in Germany, when he started dating the winner of their ‘Next Top Model’ programme.

Both have since posed naked together in a magazine, and journalists were subsequently arrested for the issue!

5. Sarah Brander (Bastian Schweinsteiger)

Keeping things in Germany, and the Bayern Munich midfielder has been dating his model girlfriend for five years.

Brander leads the WAG brigade in Germany, and also appeared in Sports Illustrated with the German away kit painted on her body.

4. Sylvie Van der Vaart (Rafael Van der Vaart)

When Harry Redknapp signed Dutch international Rafael Van der Vaart in 2010, he also brought the former Real Madrid star’s high-profile wife across to the English capital.

The 33-year-old has been married to the playmaker for almost six years, and enjoys a career as a model and TV personality back home in Holland.

3. Sara Carbonero (Iker Cassilas)

High-profile TV presenter Carbonero has been blamed in the past for Spanish defeats, and is on the arm of their goalkeeper Iker Cassilas.

The Real Madrid captain had a very public bust-up with his beau back at the World Cup in 2010 though, questioning her husband post-match after defeat to Switzerland on national telly.

2. Abbey Clancy (Peter Crouch)

The Stoke City striker certainly landed on his feet when he started dating – then married – lingerie and catwalk model Abbey Clancy.

Clancy raised her profile on TV programme Britain’s Next Top Model, and has also been involved in advertising campaigns for Umbro and Triumph motorbikes.

1. Irina Skayk (Cristiano Ronaldo)

Whilst the debate as to whether Ronaldo or Lionel Messi is the best footballer on the planet rages, we’ve put the former Manchester United winger’s other half at number one in our list of WAGs.

The 26-year-old Russian model has been dating the Portuguese international for almost two years, and has been in the Sports Illustrated Swimsuit edition for five consecutive years.

Congratulations to Ronaldo.
