Chelsea may be contested by Manchester United in their apparent pursuit of Benfica midfielder Axel Witsel, it has been claimed.

The 23-year-old only moved to the Estadio da Luz from Standard Liege last summer, and has been one of the stars of an impressive Benfica side this season.

Witsel was noted for his performances against both Manchester United and Chelsea during the Champions League this term, and appears to have attracted the attention of both clubs.

According to the Daily Express, Sir Alex Ferguson is continuing to watch the Belgium international, and a summer move to acquire his services could yet be in the offing.

Rather than Old Trafford, Stamford Bridge had initially appeared to be the most likely summer destination for Witsel, after it was confirmed by Chelsea midfielder Ramires that the club had been tracking the former.

"It’s known when a player stands out that Chelsea are eyeing him," said Ramires in the Portuguese media.

"They’re following Witsel and he’s an excellent player.

"He’s a player who can do very well in England."

Famed for his tough-tackling, Witsel was suspended for eight matches after breaking the ankle of Marcin Wasilewski during his time with Standard Liege.

He has since, however, cleaned up his act somewhat, and completing a deal for his services could prove to be quite a coup for United or Chelsea.
