Manchester United are interested in bringing Athletic Bilbao midfielder Oscar de Marcos to Old Trafford, but he will cost them as much as £26million.

The Mirror is reporting that Sir Alex Ferguson has instructed his scouts to take another look at the 22-year-old who was in the Bilbao side that knocked the Red Devils out of the Europa League this season.

The report claims that Ferguson sees De Marcos as an ideal addition to his midfield, an area that caused problems for United earlier in the season.

Paul Scholes coming out of retirement has solved theses problems momentarily, but his age means that a viable long-term replacement will have to be sought in the near future.

Ferguson’s interest was likely sparked by De Marcos’ role in a youthful Bilbao side overrunning the Old Trafford side over two legs in their Europa League last 16 tie.

The report also claims that the Spain Under-21 international has a release fee written into his contract and the Premier league champions will likely have to meet that fee.
