Redknapp on Chelsea manager shortlist

Chelsea are preparing to move for Spurs manager Harry Redknapp after the White Hart Lane boss was overlooked for the England job, according to the Daily Star.

Redknapp was thought to be in pole position for the Three Lions role, but Roy Hodgson's appointment has alerted Chelsea owner Roman Abramovich to his availability.

The Blues owner is thought to be an admirer of the adventurous style of play advocated by the Spurs manager, and the Chelsea hot-seat remains vacant following the departure of Andre Villas-Boas earlier this season.

Roberto Di Matteo has stepped into the interim role and performed magnificently, guiding the Stamford Bridge outfit to the FA Cup and Champions League finals.

However, Abramovich has so far decided against handing him the role on a permanent basis, leading to speculation that a big-name manager has been lined up for the summer.

Pep Guardiola's decision to leave Barcelona has led to rumours of a possible switch from Catalonia to west London, but the former Barca boss insists he is taking a break from football.

Should Abramovich decide against Di Matteo, Redknapp could fit the bill for the Blues. The 64-year-old boss only has one year left on his Spurs contract and he would be a popular appointment on the Blues training ground as he enjoys a good relationship with John Terry, Frank Lampard and Ashley Cole.

It seems unlikely that both London clubs will qualify for the Champions League next season so a final decision may yet rest on which side secures a spot in next year's competition. Tottenham currently occupy fourth spot but Chelsea could steal a qualifying spot if they beat Bayern Munich on 19 May.
