Mikel: We must ignore disappointment

Chelsea midfielder John Obi Mikel has urged his Blues team-mates to refocus for the FA Cup final on Saturday.

The top four hopes of Roberto di Matteo’s side took a major blow on Wednesday with a 2-0 defeat to Newcastle United at Stamford Bridge, leaving them four points off fourth place with just two games to play.

Mikel acknowledged that Chelsea’s chances of Champions League football next year were likely to rest on whether they can win in the final against Bayern Munich later this month.

However, he warned that thoughts of this game cannot get in the way of their concentration for the FA Cup showdown with Liverpool this Saturday.

“Yes, and now we have to concentrate,” he says in the Evening Standard when asked if a top four finish is out of their reach.

“It’s difficult and everyone is going to say that the only chance we have [to qualify] is to win the Champions League Final.

“It is what everyone wants, what the fans want and what we really want. But we have to make sure we win the Cup Final on Saturday and make sure that we don’t let it go past us.”

Chelsea were poor against Newcastle and will be weary going into the final against Liverpool, having played six games in less than three weeks.

They will be faced with a team in a similar to them however, as a poor league campaign for the Anfield side has found its only relief in the cups – they have already won the Carling Cup this season.
