Manchester United look set to win the race for the signature of Benfica's highly-rated midfielder Nicolas Gaitan, according to the London Metro.

The 24-year-old Argentine playmaker has been the subject of much speculation over the past few months, after turning in a series of scintillating performances for the Portuguese club, particularly in the Champions League this year.

Gaitan first caught the eye of Red Devils boss Sir Alex Ferguson when the two sides met in the group stages of Europe's top tier competition, and has since been linked with a summer move to Old Trafford.

Speaking to journalists in response to rumours linking his client with a move to the Premier League, Gaitan's agent Jose Ibarren confirmed:

"Nicolas likes Manchester United a lot. He would like to play for Manchester United.

"If there is an offer for him, Nicolas would be happy to listen and negotiate."

United are known to be on the lookout for midfield reinforcements with Ryan Giggs and Paul Scholes both coming to the end of their illustrious careers.

The reigning champions have been linked with a number of prospective targets, but a move for Gaitan now looks to be the club's first choice option when the transfer window reopens this summer.
