Arsene Wenger says his Arsenal side are ‘switched on’ as they go in search of keeping rivals Tottenham at bay and securing automatic qualification for the Champions League by finishing third on Sunday.
The Gunners are without a win in four games and could have fallen behind Tottenham having overturned a ten point deficit to their rivals earlier in the season as they stumbled to a 3-3 draw with Norwich last weekend.
That left them facing up to the prospect of not only falling behind Spurs but also tumbling out of the top four, however Harry Redknapp’s side could only draw against Aston Villa and fellow top four hopefuls Newcastle suffered a 2-0 defeat against Manchester City.
Arsenal hold a point advantage over Spurs and two over Newcastle going in to their final game of the season against West Brom, with third place meaning certain qualification for the Champions League while fourth may miss out altogether if Chelsea take the final qualification spot by emerging victorious in the tournament’s final later this month.
Wenger says his sole focus is on beating the Baggies and not what is going on elsewhere.
"We have gone through all scenarios," he told Arsenal’s official site. "We have the possibility of securing third spot on Sunday and we just want to take it. After that, we will face the consequences.
"We have a fantastic position, we are switched on and, if we win the game, we don't have to think about anything else.
"The rules are the rules, you know them at the start of the season and you have to accept them. But we want to finish third, we have the potential to do it, so let's do it. The consequences if you don't, you deal with after the game. You just have to look at it as an opportunity you want to take.
"For us it is just about finding the right mixture - to be focused, combative and relaxed but especially to be faithful to play our football. Because, at the end of the day, it will be down to playing well, no matter what is at stake."
