Louis van Gaal has emerged as the leading contender to become Liverpool's new Sporting Director as Fenway Sports Group aim to accelerate their revamp of the club, reports the Daily Mail.

The former Ajax and Holland coach has been out of work since he was sacked by Bayern Munich just over a year ago, and is said to be intrigued by the prospect of working in England.

Reds owner John W Henry is looking to bring in an experienced director to work alongside a youthful coach, and the 60-year-old's ability to nurture and promote young talent makes him an appealing option for FSG.

With Roberto Martinez, Brendan Rodgers and Andre Villas-Boas all reportedly in the frame to replace Kenny Dalglish at the Anfield helm, Van Gaal may be keen to take on the coaching role himself, so strong is his personality.

The Dutchman was the first name touted as the man to replace Damien Comolli when Liverpool's former Director of Football was sacked just six weeks ago, and has now emerged as a leading candidate for the managerial position.
