United face Barca battle for Alba

Manchester United will need to fight off strong interest from Barcelona if they want to sign left-back Jordi Alba this summer.

The Daily Mail claim Red Devils manager Sir Alex Ferguson is considering Alba as one of the candidates to be a long-term replacement for the position’s current incumbent, Patrice Evra.

The Old Trafford club will have to contest with the Catalan club, however, as they look to fill a position that has caused them one or two problems in the past.

The 23-year-old currently plays for La Liga side Valencia and looks to have become the first choice in his position under Spain coach Vicente del Bosque, so he is expected to be in the side for the defence of the European Championship title.

The report suggests Barcelona are in the driving seat to sign a player who started out as a midfielder and can play both positions, which could explain why Ferguson has earmarked Everton’s Leighton Baines as possible transfer target.
