Carrick could make England return

Roy Hodgson is open to selecting Michael Carrick for England in the future – and says there is a chance of the Manchester United man appearing at this summer’s European Championships if another of his midfielders gets injured.

Gareth Barry and Frank Lampard have both been forced to pull out of England’s squad for Euro 2012 in the last week, with Phil Jagielka and Jordan Henderson stepping up to take their places.

Carrick missed out on the original 23-man squad after declaring he would no be interested in playing for the Three Lions as a bit-part player, and subsequently he wasn’t considered as a replacement for Barry or Lampard.

Hodgson believes that the former Tottenham midfielder could play for his country again in the future, and says it wouldn’t have been fair to call him up for the tournament in Poland Ukraine this summer – but his hand may be forced if another players pulls out of his squad through injury.

“Contact was made with Michael Carrick before I took the job,” Hodgson said. “It was made clear to me that he wasn’t a player who wanted to be considered, so quite frankly he wasn’t a player that I did consider.

“At the time, with all the senior players at our disposal, maybe it wasn’t so important.

“Michael Carrick is a player who I’ve always admired, of course, and who knows? In the future if these type of injuries continue then he might have a part to play. But I didn’t feel that was appropriate before the European Championship.”

Carrick has 22 international caps to his name and was part of Fabio Capello’s squad for the 2010 World Cup, although he didn’t make it onto the pitch.
