Arsenal sign quality not quantity

Arsenal chief executive Ivan Gazidis has tempered expectations of a summer of frantic transfer activity at the Emirates Stadium - insisting Arsenal are looking for quality not quantity.

The Gunners have already secured one high-quality signing in the form of established German international Lukas Podolski, and Gazidis believes the former-Cologne signing will give fans a taste of things to come at Euro 2012.

"We have acted early to get the critical signing in Lukas Podolski," said Gazidis. "Our fans will be able to see him compete at the Euros and see what a very good player he is."

But the Gunners may be quieter than fans expect over the summer, as Gazidis suggested Arsenal boss Arsene Wenger was looking for quality rather than quantity. Last summer, the uncertainty over Champions League qualification - Arsenal faced a playoff against Udinese - meant Wenger was forced to wait, before eventually signing a number of players in a series of deadline-day moves.

But this year Arsenal have secured automatic participation in the Champions League by virtue of their third-placed Premier League finish, and Gazidis believes that gives them an advantage in the hectic transfer market.

"The key for us is not the volume of signings we might make but that the signings we make add something to the squad. That is something Arsene [Wenger] thinks extremely carefully about and for all of the pressure he is placed under, he tends to make good decisions."

Gazidis also confirmed that the club would not be commenting on the ongoing Robin van Persie contract situation until both parties had something to announce. With van Persie set to play for Holland in Ukraine and Poland, no announcement is expected before the end of Euro 2012.
