Liverpool’s hopes of signing Barcelona starlet Cristian Tello have been dealt a blow by the Catalan club’s new manager.

The Anfield club had been linked with a move for the 20-year-old earlier this year, but new Barca manager Tito Vilanova has told Tello and fellow winger Issac Cuenca that they will not be allowed to leave Camp Nou this summer, according to a report in talkSPORT.

Although it was Kenny Dalglish who had taken an interest in the Spain Under-21 international Tello, new Reds manager Brendan Rodgers would unlikely pass up the chance to sign him.

Both products of the Famous La Masia academy at the catalan club, Tello and Cuenca managed to break into the first team last season and were used regularly by outgoing boss Pep Guardiola.

They were expected to feature less next season with the return on David Villa and Ibrahim Afellay from long-term injury.

However, Vilanova has reportedly told the pair he wants to build the next generation of Barcelona stars around them
