Tottenham will reportedly sell Luka Modric to Real Madrid this summer - information Daniel Levy has passed on to Andre Villas-Boas as the Portuguese considers becoming the club's next manager.

Villas-Boas has reportedly had extensive talks with Levy over the past few days and is the favourite to succeed Harry Redknapp at White Hart Lane, following the latter's sacking last week.

The Portuguese had initially wanted to seek assurances that Spurs would retain the services of Modric during the imminent transfer window, but The Guardian reports the midfielder will be sold.

It is claimed that Villas-Boas has been informed that Spurs will sell Modric to Real Madrid as Jose Mourinho attempts to further reinforce his record-breaking Bernabeu side.

Although this news has not put Villas-Boas off the idea of joining Spurs, the 34-year-old is said to be unhappy about mixed messages he is receiving from Levy, particularly as the club's chairman continues to pursue other candidates.

Villas-Boas is reportedly threatening to remove himself from the running to replace Redknapp after it emerged he is not necessarily the first choice candidate for the vacant position.
