Roy Hodgson last night said England's players can be proud of their performance at Euro 2012 despite being knocked out by Italy.

In an all too familiar scenario for English supporters, the Three Lions lost on penalties for the sixth time in a major tournament.

Italy though were the superior side, with man of the match Andre Pirlo capping a superior performance with a cool finish in the shoot out.

The Azzuri deservedly go through to the semi-finals of the competition - where they will play Germany on Thursday evening.
