Arsenal: Top five transfer targets

Football News

Arsenal have been one of the busier clubs in the transfer market since the end of the 2011/12 season, bringing forwards Olivier Giroud and Lukas Podolski to the club already.

However, Arsene Wenger still has plenty of irons in the fire – if reports are to be believed – with future activity likely to depend on whether the club can keep Robin Van Persie at the Emirates.

If the Dutchman leaves, extra funds are likely to be available for players, although the likelihood of a £30 million move for a player like Ganso remains minuet – Wenger simply doesn’t do his business for that kind of fee.

He often finds value at a cheaper price, however, and will look to do the same again this summer. So who do you want to join the Gunners in the transfer window? Have your say at the bottom of the article…

Ibrahim Afellay

The Barcelona winger stated last month that he’d be keen to stay at the Nou Camp next season, but reports over the weekend claimed the player’s agent has been told he’s no longer needed at the club.

Arsenal and Inter Milan are said to be the two clubs who could rescue Afellay from La Liga obscurity, and with a €6 million bid thought to be enough for the player, both could make moves before their respective seasons begin in August.

The former PSV Eindhoven star would add speed and skill to the flanks for the Gunners, and crucially might help the club to persuade Robin Van Persie to stay at the Emirates.

Yann M’Vila

One of the worst kept secrets in recent times, with the Rennes midfielder on the Arsenal radar for well over 18-months now.

Arsene Wenger has confirmed his interest the past, and the player himself admitted last month that the Gunners are a club he’d love to play for.

“I have heard Arsenal are interested in me. I like Arsenal and I like the Premier League. I don’t know what is happening with the clubs, but yes, I would be interested in the Premier League and Arsenal,” the 21-year-old is quoted as saying in June.

Bayern Munich are also credited with an interest, and M’Vila is expected to cost in the region of £17 million.

Alvaro Negredo

Spanish newspaper AS claims the Gunners are keen on the Sevilla striker, who would cost a club-record £20 million in this summer’s transfer window.

With Liverpool also reportedly interested, a Premier League scrap could ensue, but Negredo appears worth it after notching double figures in the last five La Liga seasons with Almeria and Sevilla.

A full international with Spain, the 26-year-old could work as either a replacement for Robin Van Persie, or a foil if they can keep hold of the Dutchman.

Clint Dempsey

After a brilliant season with Fulham, it seemed like Dempsey was destined for a move to the Gunners back in May after he admitted he wanted to play in the Champions League.

More recent reports claim Liverpool are also interested, but a lack of football at Europe’s top table plays into the Gunners hands if they look to pursue the Cottagers star.

The USA international’s contract expires in 12-months, and after hinting he won’t sign an extension towards the end of last season, manager Martin Jol might have to consider cashing-in on the player.

Robin Van Persie

Securing the future of Van Persie at the Emirates Stadium could be the best piece of business Arsenal will ever do in the transfer window.

With just one-year left on his own contract, Arsene Wenger knows his sell-on value decreases if an agreement can’t be reached, potentially forcing the north London club’s hand on a move.

All appeared lost just a week ago, but reports of a potential u-turn have given fresh hope that ‘RVP’ might just change his mind and stay for a little while longer under the French professor.
