Beckham strike inspires Galaxy comeback

David Beckham continued his fine form since being left out of the Team GB squad for this summer’s Olympics, scoring one and helping create another in the 2-2 draw against Vancouver Whitecaps.

The England legend was a surprise omission from Stuart Pearce’s squad, having helped secure the Games seven years ago. However, the former Manchester City boss insisted he wasn’t willing to include a player for anything other than football reasons.

That’s left Beckham free to concentrate on life in the MLS, and after bagging a stunning brace in the 5-3 win over the Portland Timbers, he struck again with a deflected effort on Wednesday to get his side back in the game.

A chipped ball from the former Manchester United midfielder was then flicked inside as the game neared its conclusion, and rookie Jose Villarreal curled home a beautiful left-foot finish from the edge of the box to earn his side a point.

The result maintains a solid recovery from Bruce Arena’s side after a disappointing start to the season, with state rivals Chivas next on the agenda at The Home Depot Centre.
