Pearce out to create GB legacy

Team GB manager Stuart Pearce is hoping his side can make a huge mark on this summer’s Olympic Games, and pave the way for another side to be formed in four-years time.

Manchester United and Wales winger Ryan Giggs captain’s the side, which last competed at the Olympics in 1960, whilst Micah Richards and Craig Bellamy are the other over-age players. All three start tonight at Old Trafford.

With a partisan home crowd expected, Pearce knows his side need to make a good start before matches against the UAE and Uruguay in Group A, and he’s expecting to pick up three points against the African outfit tonight.

“We’ve got a fantastic opportunity to sow a seed and say ‘can this happen more often?’ and say to the public this is a valid tournament,” the former England full-back told the press.

“It always boils down to me as a coach that the players go back to their clubs having had a fantastic experience and [having] been very proud to represent Great Britain.

“All the lads have embraced it, we were fortunate to go to the village last week, you want to enjoy the Olympic experience but the bottom line is you want to win football matches.”
