Fernando Torres says he is ready to lead the line for Chelsea next season – after he sought advice from the man he will replace, Didier Drogba.

Both Drogba and Torres were often left fighting it out for one starting spot last season, with the Ivorian getting the nod in the FA Cup final as well as the Champions League final.

Drogba slotted home the winning penalty in the Champions League final in May to secure the west London club’s first ever Champions League success before announcing his departure after eight years with the club.

With the 34-year-old now out of the way and plying his trade in China, Torres is expected to be a regular starter and will be ably supported by a host of midfield talent such as Eden Hazard and Oscar who have been snapped up by the Blues in the summer transfer window.

The Spaniard says he is ready to find his best goal-scoring form, and insisted he is ready to take over from Drogba.

"I am looking forward to it [the new season]. I like the responsibility and it's a thing I've been doing all my life," Torres told Chelsea's official website.

"I think Didier did everything for this club, scoring the winning goal in the Champions League was an inspiration for us.

"Our relationship was great and I was talking to him when he decided to leave he wished me all the best and hopefully one day Chelsea fans will remember me as they are going to remember him."

Torres says he is also aware of the new pressure placed on Chelsea now they are European champions, and says he wants to continue winning trophies after claiming the European Championships with Spain earlier this month.

"It was an amazing summer for us, especially for Juan Mata and me who won the Champions League with the team and then were with the Spanish team and won in Europe, which means everything," he said.

"We know we have big expectations this season, there are a lot of trophies to win and we are ready for the challenge. I am sure it is going to be a good season."

He added: "We are really happy and looking forward to the season.”

"In pre-season we need to show we want to be part of the team, there are lots of new players coming in and we hope after the Olympics we will start working together fully. Different players have come, so it's exciting for us."
