Chelsea have reportedly had a £5million bid for Marseille’s Cesar Azpilicueta turned down.

A report in The Sun claims the Blues were told to come back with something closer to the French club’s valuation of £8million.

Roberto di Matteo needs more options in the right-back position, as Jose Bosingwa’s release this summer left the Stamford Bridge side with just veteran Paulo Ferriera as a natural choice for the position.

Branislav Ivanovic has covered there before, but he is more at home in the centre of defence.

The report claims Azpilicueta is the Chelsea manager’s top target after impressing in the Champions League for the Ligue 1 outfit last season.

The 22-year-old is in London with Spain’s Olympic football squad, but will be free to negotiate any move now after World and European champions crashed out at the group stages having failed to score a goal.

The report suggests Chelsea owner Roman Abramovich is willing to up the bid in the next few days.
