Liverpool will reportedly miss out on the signing of Italian legend Alessandro del Piero, who is currently in talks with both Olympiakos and Sydney FC.

The 37-year-old is available on a free transfer after leaving Juventus following a glorious 19-year association with the club, during which he made 698 appearances and scored 286 goals.

Liverpool would appear to be in desperate need of goalscoring reinforcements, and Del Piero is one of a number of available strikers to have been linked with a move to Anfield.

However, according to the Daily Mail, Liverpool are set to miss out on Del Piero as Olympiakos look to thrash out a deal to bring the World Cup winner to Athens.

Del Piero is also a target for Premier League newcomers Southampton, while reports in Australia claim he has already agreed to sign for A-League side Sydney FC.

Liverpool, meanwhile, have also been linked with former Red Michael Owen, although Brendan Rodgers is expected to pass up any opportunity to sign the 32-year-old.
