Barcelona’s Pique is world’s best defender

Barcelona centre-half Gerard Pique is the best defender in the world, according to a poll of nearly 115000 football fans.

The Spain international narrowly won the vote ahead of PSG’s summer signing from AC Milan, Thiago Silva.

That pair made up the majority of the vote but it was a reasonably close contest in the poll organised by GMF.

Other contenders were Manchester City captain Vincent Kompany, Chelsea captain John Terry, Manchester United captain Nemanja Vidic, Germany international Mats Hummels and Real Madrid’s Pepe.

1st – Gerard Pique, Barcelona – 27%


2nd – Thiago Silva, PSG – 23%

3rd – John Terry, Chelsea – 16%

4th – Vincent Kompany, Manchester City – 11%

4th – Nemanja Vidic, Manchester United – 11%

7th – Pepe, Real Madrid – 9%

8th – Mats Hummels, Borussia Dortmund – 3%
