Liverpool captain Steven Gerrard has not travelled to Switzerland for the club's Europa League tie against Young Boys.

Reds boss Brendan Rodgers has decided to rest Gerrard, Luis Suarez, Jose Reina, Glen Johnson, Martin Skrtel, Daniel Agger, Joe Allen and Martin Kelly - all have remained on Merseyside.

As a result, Rodgers will field an extremely inexperienced team. New signing Samed Yesil is in the squad, and the Liverpool manager has hinted the 18-year-old will make his debut.

But Jamie Carragher has made the trip and will provide leadership and experience in the heart of the Liverpool defence. Nuri Sahin and Jonjo Shelvey have both travelled and the two should start for the Reds as the begin their Europa League campaign.

Rodgers has one eye on the visit of Manchester United on Sunday, and after a difficult start to the season, feels he needs his key players well rested for the weekend's match.

"I can understand why people would perceive us as not taking [the Europa League] seriously but I will always do what is in the best interests of the football club," Rodgers said.

"There is no doubt the Premier League is our number on priority, I've made that clear from the off with the position of our squad."

Liverpool provisional squad to face Young Boys: Jones, Wisdom, Carragher, Coates, Enrique, Shelvey, Sahin, Henderson, Downing, Yesil, Morgan, Gulacsi, Robinson, Coady, Suso, Sterling, Pacheco, Assaidi.
