Manchester United legend Sir Bobby Charlton thinks Robin Van Persie is a "great goalscorer" and will prove to be an excellent signing for Sir Alex Ferguson's side.

Charlton is Manchester United's record goalscorer, and the former-England international is backing the Dutchman to score goals on a regular basis at Old Trafford.

The £24m former-Arsenal captain has bagged four goals in two Premier League starts, including a match-winning hat-trick against Southampton.

And Charlton is predicting plenty more goals from Van Persie.

"We're very happy to have Robin Van Persie here," Charlton told the United Review. "You can't possibly see him not scoring goals for us.

"He'll do his chasing, he's good in the air and he doesn't think about it. When the goal is there, he doesn't look up - take his goal against Fulham for example. The chance came to him and he just helped it on its way.

"Robin is a great goalscorer; that's why Sir Alex [Ferguson] likes him."

Charlton also thinks United's excellent record against Arsenal helped convince the Dutchman to swap north London for Manchester.

Last season, Manchester United beat Arsenal 8-2 at Old Trafford in one of the most one sided games of the season.

Sir Alex Ferguson's side travel to Anfield to face Liverpool on Sunday. Both clubs have made plans to mark the Hillsborough disaster following the recently published Hillsborough report, and club captains Nemanja Vidic and Steven Gerrard will release 96 balloons prior to kick off in memory of those who died in the 1989 tragedy.
