Fernando Torres backed to score more than Lionel Messi

There have been far more downs than ups during the Chelsea career of Fernando Torres, and the Spanish striker has stumbled into another trough following a summer peak.

Torres began the season well enough following a European Championship triumph with Spain; scoring three times in his first four appearances for Chelsea after winning the Golden Boot in Poland and Ukraine.

Since then, however, his confidence appears to have evaporated once again, although Torres may be buoyed by the news that he retains the faith of supporters, who believe the 28-year-old will rediscover his goalscoring touch.

Over 80,000 fans were polled by GMF to find out who the public believe will score the most goals in the Champions League this term, and the Chelsea forward ran out the clear winner.

Torres gathered 29 percent of the overall vote, with Manchester United's Robin van Persie placed second with 20 percent, but the former has his work cut out to prove he is worthy of the belief.

Perhaps the most surprising statistic of all is that only 18 percent of voters decided that Lionel Messi would win the Champions League Golden Boot once again, following his 14 goals in the competition last season.

The 25-year-old already has two goals in Europe this term after netting twice for Barcelona against Spartak Moscow on Wednesday night, and the smart money would suggest Messi will reign supreme at the end of the campaign.

Just one percent behind Messi was his greatest of rivals, Cristiano Ronaldo, who has 24 goals in the competition across his career, compared to Torres' 11 strikes.

Making up the numbers are Arsenal's Lukas Podolski - who scored against Montpellier -with six percent, Paris Saint-Germain striker Zlatan Ibrahimovic with five percent, only two percent for Wayne Rooney, just one percent for Sergio Aguero and two percent of fans choosing 'other'.
