Vidic set for swift return

Defender Nemanja Vidic should be fit to play in Manchester United’s next fixture against Tottenham on Saturday.

The United captain missed out on the 2-1 win over Liverpool on Sunday as a precaution having felt his knee wasn’t up to the task.

Jonny Evans and Rio Ferdinand started for United at the back at Anfield as goals from Rafael and Robin van Persie secured all three points for the Red Devils.

Vidic missed the majority of last season with an anterior cruciate ligament injury, and Sir Alex Ferguson admitted he did not think it was worth risking his captain with a string of high-profile fixtures coming up.

"He was just feeling a bit tight round about his knee and we decided just to give him a break today,"explained Ferguson. "Hopefully he’ll be alright next week."

United face Newcastle in the Captial One cup during mid-week, but Vidic is not expected to feature.

The 30-year-old last featured in United’s 1-0 win over Galatasaray.
